Renovation kitchen, floor renovation project

new foundation

pot rack and soft paint color
new laminate floor

ocean theme hardware
kick molding ready for installation
The never ending kitchen project continues.  The new floor is a really a huge improvement, as can be seen in the photo above to the right.  Monumental improvement would be a better description of the improvement. It looks and feels good, this has been a  long slow road. We both have been working on this kitchen for two years. Mr has been great about getting back on track to get this room done. It has a new foundation, rebuilt exterior doorway, new joists, new appliances, renovated cabinets that were stripped/painted-then fitted with new shelves/hinges/ocean themed hardware pulls (one of the pulls can be seen above left)  and then rearranged into a new layout configuration including two new cabinets, new counter-tops, a clean soft colored new paint job on ceilings and walls (seen in the pot rack photo at the top), new moldings-base and shoe (seen in the new floor photos above right)-in addition to kick moldings waiting to be installed,  new pot rack, the addition of an island...all that and still not done. That is why I call it the never-ending project!  All is looking good, but we have yet to cross all the t's and dot all the i's! It is happening, but it is so slow. The painful part about doing things yourself is the slow progress, and the wait for things to be completed. You often pay for the materials and wait another year to enjoy the fruits of that purchase and the labor you invest, because something interferes with the completion of the installation. The good part is that the renovations become affordable and there is a lot of self satisfaction in doing things yourself. It makes you proud that you accomplished so much.

kitchen floor as left by previous owners
When I rehabbed my first floor via painting a muddy brown floor off white, the transformation was dramatic and addicting. It was very very tedious and difficult work, requiring many coats, treatments and furniture rearranging in between the coats of paint. The transformation was evident after the first coat, though the first coast was absorbed by the old porous floors. I persevered with succeeding coats and it made my floor look like a new bride with a makeover for the wedding. It changed EVERYTHING.,....if you suspect that your floors could use a new dress DO IT! A terrible floor is painful to live with because it is so painful to look at. Until I took on these two renovations I would not have realized just how much of a difference a clean new neutral floor would make. The change is monumental. The work is exhausting and sometimes frustrating while in process, but worth all of the effort, organization and work it takes to get the job done. I can honestly say that new floors are really a huge bang for your buck. Our kitchen floors were stained (photo of floors left by previous owner above right), outdated, and anything but subtle. They were in your face gross. The flooring renovation changed the tone of the whole kitchen for the better. We now love being in that room. We had the same experience in our less than stellar bathroom...look at the change this new floor made in the room. New floors are worth the expense and the effort.....hands down no question!

  1. Homeowners are often concerned about sealing their house too tightly; however, this is very unlikely in most older homes. A certain amount of fresh air is needed for good indoor air quality and there are specifications that set the minimum amount of fresh air needed for a house.
