Iris, Swallowtail Butterfly,French Weigelia
Took a walk around the garden today. I have been away a few days for the holidays so I thought I would see what changes have occurred since I left. My first photo is above and it was a complete surprise, a gift! I put my camera up to photograph the French Weigelia in bloom (shown below to the left), and in swooped this beauty....RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE LENS! A perfect Swallowtail butterfly landed right in front of me on the pink French Weigelia. It doesn't get any better than that! Just a breathtaking touch of beauty in my day....
So, what else was new to the garden? In two words....a lot! The Red Bud tree is green, no more purple flowers..so sad to see the color go. The struggling Violas are still struggling. The strong purple one (on the left in the photo) is thriving and the wilting yellow one (on the right) looks as if it just might be starting to recover. I now realize that it is shaded by a garden ornament, so the ornament will have to move. It is surprising how such a small thing can effect the growth of a plant so much.
Both were planted at the same time, but the yellow on the right was ripped out during the night by some critter. The poor yellow viola still has not recovered from the trauma. More Iris have come into color. Beautiful rich colors are slightly different between each plant and location. One can't help but wonder how the soil chemistry, and light conditions effect the bloom colors. This eastern shore of Maryland just seems to be a great climate for these Irises. I see so many varies and colors here, and many seem to be heirloom varieties preserved in the gardens of old houses like ours. Here are my latest:
