Delmarva sunset glow on the Wicomico |
Boredom grips us in the throes of winter. In search of an interesting something or activity, we took a small road trip through the boondocks of our area. I use the term boondocks affectionately. Charming would be a good description of the areas I refer to, so don't detect any
disparagement in that comment. Without much consideration for the late time day, we took to the road.

View of Whitehaven approaching the ferry through the marsh |
Our route took us over our local rural ferry. A ferry has been operating in this spot for hundreds of years, from what I understand. Taking this ferry transforms a long drive into a reasonable time frame, so we often include it in our route plan. We drove into the coastal plain, where the ferry is located and we we gasped in awe. The colors were magnificent. All glowed in the cloak of late day sunshine. The waters were such a deep blue, as they often appear in the winter, and the saffron gleem of the setting sun made a wonderful complementary color scheme that visually sizzled. Such a beautiful little pleasure, on our journey.

Whitehaven Hotel from the ferry |

Sun bathing the river at sundown |
The views approaching the ferry are spectacular. Marsh grass encircles the car and as you approach the ferry the road rises to see the river and the town of Whitehaven in the distance, charming, peaceful, beautiful. As we approached the ferry we could see migratory birds dotting the riverside. Some were roosting along the river, others were diving and hunting a meal. The houses on the opposite sideof the river reflected glimmering light in the distance. What a wonderful scene!

Wait Line for the ferry |
As we approached the wait line for the ferry, my eyes fell upon the vehicle before us. The absurdity of its cargo was difficult to ignore. A roll of hay was completely out of scale to the vehicle carrying it. I couldn't resist photographing the truck and its payload. We couldn't help imagining that the pick up would tip to the rear. Take a look at the photo and see what you think. Comments welcome!

Huge hay bale, bigger than the ferry pilot's box!
