voracious Swallowtail catepillar |
voracious creatures you can ever imagine. Their efficiency, stealth and vigor are unparalleled. These critters can demolish an entire 18" ball of herbacious material in an hour. It is awesome to see. So far they have comsumed a celantro plant, a couple of dill plants, a fennel plant all in my herb garden...Their most nefarious adventure was to demolish a new celantro plant that I purchased in the grocery store and never had outside my house. I brought it home. Knowing that the little theives were outside, I decided that it would be safer to grow it as a houseplant on the kitchen windowsill. When I woke up and came into the kitchen in the morning, the entire plant was gone...nada...nothing, I mean nothing was left of it. Well, there was one thing left. The yellow black and green catepillar that ate it. So here are some phots for you to study. If you see one of these protect your plants.
This catepillar is the early form of what grows into a Swallowtail butterfly. The butterfly is way too beautiful to kill the pesky catepillar so I let them run rampant, but move the off the offending plant to elsewhere in the garden. No, it has not been a successful strategy.
