Spring Migration: Hummingbirds Arrive at Shore Side Farm House

Male Hummingbird feeding at my favorite feeder....first hummer of the year has arrived.

I had a surprising welcome two weeks ago. It was a sunny embracing day. The hostas were beginning to pop up because it was so hot! The cold really held off the plants from emerging this spring. Of course the daffodils did bloom late, but no sooner did they bloom than the heat rolled in and fried them on their stems. Very disappointing to be frank. I wait for those little burst of sunshine all long cold winter, and poof dead due to unseasonal warmth. After the yellow ones fried, the white narcissus' took a beating with the violent winds we have been tolerating all spring. It was a tough spring for blooms, I tell you!

Anyway, I was outside partrolling the garden beds for new growth and plant emersions. It was early in the morning, and I was immersed in my pursuits. My ears ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzed me to a startle. I stood up to consider the noise and look for the bee that caused it. Then it occured to me .."could it possibly be a hummingbird? I though."...no, its too early. My garden primping continued and I went about my business. I didn't see any hummingbirds. It looked all clear at the feeders. No hummingbirds.

Later in the day after five o'clock, I again came out to the garden, next to the hummer feeders.  The clematis on the post needed to be tied and guided to create a climbing vine design.  Guiding the clematis vine is microsurgery in many ways, so I pulled up a chair under the hummingbird feeders, and sorted the vines into a climbing position. As I sat beside the post, again I was buzzed ZZZZZZZZZZzzz. This time I saw the aggressor...indeed it was my first hummingbird! My silly heart jumped with anticipation to welcome the spring and critter I fervently awaited. Good news...oh such good news. All is in order, its a fat little mature male. It will not be so lonely here anymore, the Vaudeville entertainment has just arrived! So it begins.....
