The river ice broke up a bit today, there was lots of ice mounds, ice floes and moving water. Snow is coming tonight, nothing serious one to two inches of frosting. Most important the wind quit a couple of days ago, so it has been "time to make the donuts"..."time to make hay while the sunshines"...or in old house terms "time to install insulation in the crawl space"! To accomplish this task the poor man spent the entire afternoon crawling around in silt and oyster shells. Try to picture a tunnel like in the movie "The Great Escape". That will give you a visual for this project. At points the "crawlspace" has less than 12" of height from ground level to the floor above (see photos), certainly not enough to roll over. This project is a messy miserable chore to be sure. Why you might ask? Well, the oyster shells are sharp as knives (there are thousands of them on the floor of the crawl space-see in photos) and the silt adheres to you and your clothes like talcum powder. Hence, when standing after departing this dungeon, you appear to be shedding your skin, while creating a cloud at the same time. All in all, it makes for a quite uncomfortable environment. Considering that we might as well have dollar bills flying out the windows and cracks in the house, something has to be done...good, bad, indifferent that crawlspace needs insulation! Three weeks of heat have cost $400. Does that sound like motivation? Take it where you can get it. We have to do something about this. Today was "do something" day. All day I heard moans, groans, crinkling sounds and wood creaking under the floors....the sounds of progress and misery. Gizmo the cat was following him around for the duration of the project, by sitting on top of where Mr was working under the floors. It was pretty funny. C'est la vie!
