Today is expulsion day for the aged scalloped cornices in the livingroom and diningroom. They have been a continuous subject of comment by my daughters. The comment generally goes something like "Oh,please!" accompanied by rolling eyes. Translation: remove asap. I don't like them, have wanted to remove them but like everything else in this ol' aged house they will be a problem and create an isore when removed. They were installed with about ten nails, yes two inch long nails, on each side of the cornice strait into the sheetrock, which covers the original horsehair plaster. Previous owners were big on overkill. Nothing here is easy....
Each cornice shows several layers of paint, avocado-red-beige-blue-so these suckers were here fancying up the premises for a long long time. Since we bought the place their days have been numbered. Today was the doomsday ride. I don't care that the room looks worse than before they were removed. I will deal with that. Mr was willing to do demolition today, and so we go with the flow. All of this was precipitated by new curtain rods and curtains which were precipitated by frozen temperatures and $400 worth of heating oil that only heated the place for three weeks. I digress; that was another story and problem that seems to be solved at this juncture. Anyway.....The room has yet to be painted, inspite of its "heat pipe leaks" stained ceiling, and its peeling paint floors, but hey everything in its own time. At least now with the cornice surgery done the nail holes can get spackled and primed and then the room can get painted and we will be leaning a bit more towards normal. Ha, like that will ever happen!
Cornices have been replaced with simple white velvet panels hung with clip on pewter rings and rods with bird cage ends. Simple, practical, hopefully warmth creating for the rest of the winter. This little project makes me happy because it suits my general philosophy of life here in the farmhouse, get one thing accomplished everyday that puts you a step towards a better life. (-:
