We have a damn right disguisting window, well at least we had a disguisting window. We did not notice this window until we bought the house at which time we were outside looking into the house when noticed that the paint was curling off of this window...which was inside a storm window. The whole window was pretty dark, dirty and gross. We couldn't even open the window from inside the house. Our guess is that the window had not been opened in twenty or thiry years. We determined that from the dirt and mold on the window and the seized condition of the window... it could not be moved up or down! There was even sand on the window! Anyway, we have enough problems to keep us busy in this house, so we chose to ignore this window problem...we put it on the back burner. It put itself on to the front burner. The glass fell right out of the window frame four days ago in all of the cold weather we were having. It was also a holiday weekend, so we were not able to get replacement glass for three days. It was getting pretty cold in that room! Soooo, the window came out, the caulk that was used for glazing-wrong material which caused even more problems-was removed with much fanfare, and the show went on. We had to order new glass because the caulk adhered improperly to the glass causing the glass to fracture when being cleaned, that meant it was going cost more money.... Five days later we have a lot better looking window and the dirty inside the window casing has been cleaned and painted. We discovered during this project that the storm window is not the proper size for the window, it is a "make do" fitting. The previous owners bought a size that was close to the right size and then put mouldings around the edges to make it fit. This also allowed in moisture and dirt. The story of this house...a day late and a hundred bucks short. This is the saga of one window in the house, and one of two in the diningroom. There are still about 20 more windows to go that need to get this treatment....or be replaced. Here are a couple of pix of the process...sorry though, no photos of the before. We must have been so involved with the desperate situation of closing up the window in the cold that we forgot to take photos.Note the developing deterioration at the base of the window. This also has to be dealt with soon.
