Heavy rains over the last few days has caused lot of flooding all over the eastern US. My neighbor's side yard is now a lake. It has been a lake for four days. That lake is surprising and difficult to sustain because we have sandy soil, but there it sits and it seems to be getting bigger, not smaller. The bay is filling with all of the run off of these storms, and that is raising the level of the river outside. The level of the river is just below high tide level, yet high tide is not for another four hours. It is a bit frightening. I am not too mobile, so I am here most of the time. I can't say exactly how much flooding is currently happening in the area but there are lots of local areas that are at sea level. That speaks for itself. We are about ten feet over the water level, so if I am intimidated, I can't imagine how the people on water level feel.
The weather has been very strange. There has been way too much rain, not enough sun, and every combination you can think of inbetween. I looked out the window yesterday and it was absolutely pouring. The rain was teeming and it was teeming so hard that it was bouncing off the sidewalk and the car. At the same time the sun was out. I mean full bright white sun. Weird. That didn't last too long before it changed again. We had some monentary clearing at one point, so I went outdoors to check out the garden. Spring is springing for sure. The Stella D'Oro day lillies are popping sprouts and some are even an inch tall. Most other daylillies were also growing and some taller than the Stella D'Oros. Irises are coming up in the side bed, and some of the phlox subulata that I stuck in the ground actually "took" and are growing around the roots of one of the Crape Myrtles. That is a message to me to do a lot more of that! Could it be any easier? Bulbs in the cauldron I use as a planter have been growing substantially. Tulips in there are several inches high, daffodils are quite tall. They have been growing for almost well over a month. The same kinds of plants growing in the ground nearby aren't anywhere near as tall. I found two blooming crocus in a pot of plants I brought from our last home. Surprisingly there are no blooming crocus in the ground here. I guess I will have to do something about that in the fall. I realized yesterday we should be giving serious consideration to a vegetable garden, but we are so swamped with the projects here that our attentions were diverted. We need to get on that. The silly little vegetable garden we grew last summer is one of the most rewarding things we have done in a long time. Well my assignments are written, see ya.
