Oh, more construction...

Back in the saddle again, back on the range......another day another problem. Nothing here goes smoothly, nothing goes normally. Nothing has been maintained or repaired properly. Previous owners seem to have hired "the local itinerate drunks" to most of their property care and repair. They weren't very competent, probably due to the fact that they weren't very congnizant. Hence we have a new purpose in life. That life that we thought might become our own after the chickies were out, has become the posession of our house. Not something I am happy about, and Mr is probably a lot more unhappy about it than I am, because in reality it all falls on him.

Today's trevail was discovered as a result of attempting a pretty mudane repair, replacing screens on the screen porch. As Mr was removing the screens that had holes in them, he realized the bottom of the cornerpost was rotted. He removed the post to cut off the bottom and replace it. In the process of removing the post, the roof of the porch detached itself from the house.  This was a predictable, and the proper precautions were taken, yet it still happened. That prompted procedures be taken to return the porch to its former position.  It did return to position, and when attaching the porch roof to the house again....it was discovered that the place on the house that the porch was being attached to was also rotten. And so it went, on and on and on. Lots of rotted wood. I think photos are appropriate here. They tell a grand story.

First was the stripping stage. That went on wayyyy too long. Yup, this is bad, yup this is bad, yup this is bad....is there anything good? Okay, fortify, brace, prop up, in order to tear out, rip out, yank. What a royal pain. What a lot of work, its only just begun. That was day one, day two brought more misery and now at day three, its all apart and needs to be replaced. There will not be a screened porch anytime soon, a real disappointment to all who hang here.

As you can see, not much wood there to attach anything too. I knew there was big trouble when I heard Mr bring out the macho screw gun. As it pierced the house I thought to myself....boy I wouldn't do that, that could be a big problem....sounds like there is no wood to attach the porch to. My inexperienced ear made the observation of the day.

The assignment for the next week is replace the corner and then rebuild the corner of the house. I knew it was desperate when I was inside the house looking at that corner and saw blue sky out through the joint in the wall. Not good.

There are good things happening here, great friends helping with this woeful project and lots of beautiful flowers starting to bloom all around the yard.
