Its official, the Morning Glories have taken over the garden. These seeds started slow, taking weeks to germinate and sprout. They then proceeded at rocket speed, spreading all over the garden. Everyday I go out into the garden, there are new vines, new sprouts on the existing vines, and they all entwine anything that is not standing still. Mr put up a way too tall bamboo frame for the vines to grow onto, but it was so tall it was destined to fall over...especially with the winds at this time of year. Yesterday they crashed, well maybe not crashed...they dived. I wish I had had the foresight to plant them at the base of an garden arch. It would have been beautiful, maybe I will do that next year. Here is how they look today after landing on the Crape Myrtle tree.
They are holding onto the tree and forming a bridge. I am not happy about it but there doesn't seem to be much I can do about it. I tried to stand the bamboo pole back up again, but the stake I used to prop it snapped under the weight of the vines. I am done. It is self determining and it is going to stay that way. I consider it a lesson learned and will plant future Morning Glories on an arch or strings. I did not expect such and unruly plant! All in all not a rewarding planting. You win some you lose some.
Post script: My hubby just called me over to watch the hummingbirds feed on the Morning Glory flowers. The hummer just made its way up and down the huge column of flowers, eating its way to to its own glory. I guess they were worth the efforts, somebody enjoys them!
