The train is back on the track....hooray!
Things on the house repair front seem to be moving along again. Thank goodness! If I have to live another month with a kitchen floor that curls up at the seam in the middle, I will consider joining the French Foreign Legion.
Subfloor repairs have to preceed new kitchen flooring, so that is the project that has been undertaken. A big one it is. It requires removing old foundation elements, 6x6 inch sills at the base of the wall, parts of the joists and door frame. Some house parts just can't go the distance; these parts went 140 years. What more can you ask for, I guess? All needs to be replaced, and fortunately we have a resident genius who is very talented, and he taking on the challenge. It is a huge one.
Today and yesterday were rip out days . Walls were knocked down, foundation bricks chopped up, bricks chiseled clean, and walls jacked up to the point of being level. Yes, this is a job for the "big boys". Mr is a big boy, a very knowledgeable big boy, and I know he is going to do a super job. He has done it before and I am sure he is going to do it again.
This is a great gift to me. Living here entails a constant balance of antique charm, "make do torture" and creative-inventive repair. There is no doubt that the spirits of past house residents looking down on us from the hereafter, refer to me as the wimp. I don't have a lot of patience for the inconveniences involved in living in an antique house. The best result of this project is that we are finally going to get a decent kitchen floor. I loooonnnnggg for a clean, shiny, smooth, "barefooting" floor. I want a floor that can be kept clean because it has a smooth sealed finish on it. Oh, the things you long for after moving into a challenge of a house like this one. Hopefully the new floor will happen quickly after these rebuilds. I can't wait!
