Yesterday morning I was out early and heard a hammering breaking up the peace of the morning. I thought it sounded like a woodpecker. I tracked it down and much to my excitement I came upon something I have always wanted to see. It was a wood pecker. A huge Pileated Woodpecker, in fact it was 3 Pileated Woodpeckers traveling together and investigating the trees on the northeast side of my house! They are so huge and impressive, with the strangest pointed red head feathers. If you ever see one, you will not soon forget it, they are quite memorable. They are as big as a crow, very large, not as fat as a crow but as tall. Just so very cool. One of the joys of living out on the edge is that you just never know what you are going to come across out here. Right after I saw the woodpeckers a Belted Kingfisher flew past me. I thought he had left for the winter, but he is still here and was making his unusual bird call which is quite harsh. Gosh, I just love this stuff! Next up on my bird sighting wish list is an owl. The Bald Eagles are regulars around here. Its a joy to see them.
