Foundation repairs, paint floor

There is fine and exciting news to report. Our house is on a firm foundation, probably for the first time in its 140 year old life. Mr built the new foundation around the place, and it is damn attractive and impressive. It feels better and looks better. The crawl space access was improved with new portals into it. There are now large removable doors to access the crawl space. Previously one had to slither, not even crawl, to get anywhere in there. After slithering you were covered with silt and cut by oyster shells--the material that covers the floor of the crawl space. The new foundation is a big improvement in stability and accessibility.

Last week daughter number 2 pouted and complained about the diving board floors in the dining room. When you walked across the side of the room you felt like you were walking on a diving board.  We had a china closet in there that launched china and picture frames across the room because the floors were so unstable. Take a step, send out a missle....it was quite a trick. Can you imagine, she thought this made the room uninhabitable? Ha! I agreed, but other residents didn't find it too particularly strange. While slithering through the crawl space Mr made the discovery that the problem with the floor was related to the floor joists. There weren't any! There was a beam, and two piles of bricks holding it up, but beyond each pile of bricks there was four feet of beam flying out in space..well drooping down in space would be more like it. Mr put in another parallel beam to carry the load and things stiffened right up. Thank God.  Everyone attending Thanksgiving dinner had to give the new floor a test drive, since all had been mystified by the floor's unique  properties before the mystery was analyzed and remedied. That Mr, he is a miracle worker, a natural engineer.  Things are looking up around here this week. I pray the trend continues.
