Pot Rack, Pot Storage, Pot Lid Storage Rack

Pot Rack made from an IKEA Gruntal Metal shelf, Shore Side Farm House

I have been moaning about the pot situation in that the pots are too big for our measly cabinets. Our 1974 cabinets, made in Bulgaria....(hmmm, How did previous owners manage to buy Bulgarian cabinets in 1974?) are less than adequate. As of 2009 they were pretty damn grungy and undesirable. Mr tried as he could to make me happy, as best he could. I took care of the months of painting cabinets, he took care of building pull out drawers for the large pot cabinet. The good news is that the pull outs helped, the bad news is that only the bottom shelves became pull outs and the upper shelves became even more useless than before. They could not become pull outs because there was no way to support the rolling shelves.  Getting cabinets allowed me to start stocking my kitchen with my gourmet cooking tools. Well, as gourmet as I can afford. I have some nice pots that I bought over the last couple of years, I wanted to enjoy them in this new residence. This house has an electric stove. We are used to a gas stove and we miss it like crazy. My copper bottom gas stove pots could not transition to the electric stove...(according the the manufacturers instructions) so we had to do something to make it all work together. In addition to the ones I owned already that were appropriate, we needed to buy a couple of more pots, and that is when the trouble started.

We had a bit of wall space, but it was only about 14 inches wide. It was not going to hold much of a cabinet, and certainly not a cabinet that could hold  many pots. I decided it was time for a pot rack. I went shopping to my go to kitchen place, IKEA. They had a couple of choices in a good price point, but as I looked at them I pictured the problems that each rack would present. One would hang too low and block the eye contact with folks at the kitchen table. One would swing around and become unstable when pots were hung on it or removed from it. The other was black and would get dusty awfully quickly at our dusty waterside house.  I really had to give it some serious consideration to this dilema, I even took two trips to IKEA to make up my mind of what was best for our needs. I decided that neither hanging rack was good for our needs. I noticed a wide shelf made of pipe like metal rods and decided that that would give me all I wanted. Gruntal or something like that is the name and it is perfect for what I wanted to do with it. I wanted a shelf that is also a pot rack and that is what I got! I can hang pots from it and put pots or other kitchen item on the shelf above the hanging items.

I hung it right over the window and I can choose to block the window with pots or keep it open to see out. For right now, it is open and I am loving the way this turned out. My big clunky pots that had handles on both sides of the pot were really difficult to nest, so they are now hanging. The big dutch oven is up on the shelf, that is working out great. the hanging pots are out of the way and they look very snazzy and professional if I do say so myself. I am proud of myself for coming up with this alternate solution,.,and it was about half the price of the pot rack! Good job self! Oh yeah, good job Mr, he hung the shelf-rack up....
