Our couple are making some progress. One of the neighbors thinks that this pair has displaced the pair just down the lane. It is possible. I haven't seen the other pair around, they have been here since March 17, so that would be a shame if they were chased out by this pair. Anyway, these two seem to be a working committed pair. They occupy the nest, at least one of them does, most of the time. The occupier also likes to drone on with a bleeking noise....CONSTANTLY. I don't speak Osprey so I don't know what it means, but it can get annoying. I have yet to see them bring in some of their "new furniture" but other neighbors said that they have seen the pair collecting sticks and reeds from their beaches and yards. I have a park bench within clear site of the nest, but the occupier is quite disturbed when I try to sit there. If I sit on the bench it immediately takes to the sky and perches on a nearby tree to escape observation.
Here are some new pictures of their progress. I would love to get an up close view of what is in there. According to the research I have done, ospreys have a penchant for collecting items that are attractive to them. It is not unusual to find things like a boot, umbrella or some other debris in their nest...along with the bones and other remains of their captives. They are deadly fishermen, and it is exciting to see them carry their meal in their feet back to their nest. This is when I wish I had a better camera!
I will start my photos with a shot of my hiding spot. If you look close it wasn't discreet enough. As soon as I showed some movement in my observation point, the osprey gave me a good stare down, looked away to consider the possibilities of other perches, and then disappeared into the air. The rest of the photos are the ospreys just hanging out in their nest, which they do a good deal of the time...but usually not together. It will be one or the other guarding their position and not too much mutual company. All photos will enlarge if clicked.
