Here's a browse around the June garden beds. June flowers are popping all over the place. The colors are brightening the garden up and lifting my spirits. On the sunny side of the house, the colors cluster in yellows and red with an occasional touch of purple or pink. On the shady side of the house, the colors are a bit softer, pinks, purples and a touch of pale yellow and red.
These day lilies are the star on the sunny side of the house. The sunny side does have some trees that ease the strength of the sun, so the day lillies are quite happy. Another section of the sunny side is shaded by the house until after noon. This gives the plant a respite from the unrelenting heat and sun which would fry these day lilies if not for the protection of the trees. Both of these lilies are red, but they are not the same variety, nor the same shape and colors. The one on the left is smaller and finer, the one on the right if very tall, maybe 36 inches, and very full in shape. It also is very prolific creating many flower all over the plant. The one on the left is much less prolific with finer leaves.
Below is a spectacular pink day lily. It is prolific of flower, has full wide leaves and is about 24 inches tall. It is a beauty! The flowers last for a good portion of the summer. I have two of these, and the one in the shade of a big Crape Myrtle is a bit happier than the one out in the bed with no over growth, even though it is protected early in the day by a yew bush which shades some sun.
On the bottom right at the is a group of "volunteer" Portulacas. My mother called self seeded plants volunteers. These Portulacas grew from seeds dropped in the pot by last years potted plants. It is all coming together in June, and it is very satisfying. Next up...shady garden
