Mr took over feeding the hummers during my recent absence. We obviously have had lots of progeny born in the garden because when I was sitting out there next to the feeders last night I counted at least 14 of them sharing the feeders at the same time. I believe I can identify the relatives by the color markings. Last year we had one female with a bald looking white area on its forehead. No other hummingbird had this marking. This year I have about 3 or 4 birds with this head marking. When I first saw it I thought it was pollen from
collecting nectar, but no, it is a color
marking that is permanent. I figure the three more birds with it this year must be the babies of last year's piebald one. One thing for sure, these hummingbirds are eternally fascinating. I have posted some photos and a video or two for your enjoyment............listen for the communicative sqeaks much like dolphins, and watch as they quickly disperse when a car passes.
