Hurricane Sandy hits Shore Side Farm House

shoreline damage caused by Hurricane Sandy

It has been a wicked few days here at SSFH. Danger lurked in the air. There have been impending threats of disaster that were difficult to decipher and waves of inclement weather pre-cursing the arrival of "Frankenstorm".  Warnings bode ten inches of rain, 80 mile an hour winds and high tides.  Each put fear into the mix..

Households dealt with the threats as they saw fit, and appropriate for their house and location.    Being located above a flood zone, we thought we would sustain light damage. In some ways we were right and in other ways we were wrong. There is no controlling a storm like this. You get what you get.

It started with rain, then more rain and then much much more rain. Wind intensity increased by the minute until it looked like we were going to be blown off the planet.  This has been going on for three days, and continues as I write. The park benches in the neighborhood were blown over by the gusts. A cedar tree next door, well over a century old, was split down the middle by the torrential wind speeds. Most neighborhood docks were under water and remained so for the entire day.  Today they are puzzle pieces strewn all over the roadways and lawns.. Historic wharfs, marinas and parks have been destroyed, buried or altered beyond recognition. The pall of this storm will weigh over the community for a long time to come. Those wharf and parks offer refuge to tired and recreation-needy local residents. All here will be effected by the loss of these treasured patches of nature that restore the soul to take on their daily routines. There will not be enough money to restore these places for a long time to come. It is such a common loss for the whole community, it is a sad legacy of a powerful storm front. I'll share some photos of the damages below..
