| dust curtain to contain gypsum dust |
This window installation made a giant mess inside the house. The kitchen and almost everything in it is covered with wallboard dust. Mr put up a plastic curtain to contain the gypsum, but that stuff is insidious! In spite of the heavy duty plastic curtain being "hermetically sealed" with staples, wood strips and duct tape, sediment was everywhere. Vacuuming up the dust and washing everything down after the vacuuming did not do it for the clean up. So, if you're doing a project like this, do not wing it. Do your best to seal off the work area if possible. You will be glad you did.

As you can see in the photo, we also removed the glass shades on the light fixture over the kitchen table. I could just see those glass shades getting hit with some swinging tool, and shattering to kingdom come right before my eyes. I put them in a safe quiet place elsewhere in the house for this operation.

| soffit being removed |
Breaking through the interior wall was just the beginning of the operation. The sheet rock was ragged, and had the remnants of the previous window cut into the wallboard. Because of that mess the existing wallboard had to get ripped out and replaced.
There were many electrical outlets on that wall. Previous owners had their kitchen cabinets and counter tops on this wall, so there were many many outlets in the middle of the wall.Removal of these outlets left many wires just hanging out of the wall. It looked pretty ugly, so they had to be removed during this renovation. Initially the wall was pretty much intact. Ripping out the soffit was the bigger mess maker. The soffit also, had wires and other inconveniences hanging out of the wall in the way of progress. The biggest impediment to progress on the soffit was that the builder had used sixteen penny nails to build the soffit so it was difficult to remove.

All in all, the inconveniences are worth the pay off. The view is just magnificent. The light is divine. This morning I was having my coffee in front of the window, taking in the views. A giant eagle came flying by, a simple unexpected joy. Just what the doctor ordered.
